Safety
Weather conditions can change quickly and be markedly different between the valleys and fells. Plan your route and return time then let someone know, get a weather forecast, be suitably clothed and well equipped in case of an emergency and keep a look out for weather changing during the trip.
If you get into trouble you are not guaranteed to get a mobile phone signal. Make sure you have with you, something to eat and drink, several layers of clothes, gloves, hat, waterproofs, map and compass and first aid kit.
Take care walking or cycling on country lanes.
Respect the environment
Avoid creating a fire risk, keep pets under control, use the correct paths and styles on farmland, close gates, avoid damage and disturbance to flora and fauna, take litter home and do not contaminate water.
In an emergency only call 999 and ask for Police then Mountain Rescue. As registered charities they rely on voluntary contributions to continue their good work. Visit the websites of the mountain Rescue http://www.mountain.rescue.org.uk/ to see how you can help.
These teams are unpaid volunteers who attend many call-outs each year, some of which could be avoided.
