Castle Lighting
Illuminating the Castle was part of Egremont's regeneration strategy.
It aims to emphasise the castle as a central feature in the development of the area.
Initially a children's' competition was held involving Egremont's youth in a project to involve them in suggesting a design for illuminating the Norman Castle and to raise their awareness of the town's future regeneration plans.
The competition launched in January 2007 by Egremont Regeneration Partnership in conjunction with Creative Egremont, generated a good response and over fifty exceptionally creative entries were submitted by local school children. The broad range of entries included the use of lasers, fireworks, mobile phone texting, video projections and suggestions for sustainable technology.

After the competition ended a public exhibition of the entries was held in the farmers market and in Charles Edmonds library, Egremont.
Everyone was delighted with the fantastic response, level of innovation and enthusiasm from so many young people wanting to be involved in what was happening in the town
English Heritage's ancient monument officer and competition judge was very impressed with the creativity shown in bringing the castle to life.
The overall winner was Jason Hayton who later participated in a workshop at his school run by the appointed consultants, Sutton Vane Associates.
