The West Lakes Academy

The new Academy will replace Wyndham School and Ehenside Community School and provide education for 1150 students, including a sixth form of 250, principally drawn from the North Copeland area.
The West Lakes Academy is due to open in September 2008 (in the existing Wyndham school buildings), with construction work on the new building likely to start in early 2009 for completion in September 2011.
Academies are a new type of school. They bring a distinctive approach to school leadership drawing on the skills of sponsors and other supporters. They give leaders and staff new and exciting opportunities to develop educational strategies to raise standards and achievement.
Academies are all-ability schools established by sponsors working in highly innovative partnerships with Central Government and local education partners. The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) meet the capital and running costs for the Academy in full.
The West Lakes Academy will provide an excellent environment for teaching and learning that is comparable with the best available in the maintained sector. It will offer a broad and balanced curriculum for students of all abilities focusing especially on one or more subject areas. As the Academy becomes successfully established it will share its expertise and facilities with other schools and the wider community.
As well as providing the best opportunities for its students, the Academy will have a key part to play in the regeneration of our community. The new Academy will be a significant focus for learning for students, families and local residents.
